Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune

Did not finish book. Stopped at 50%.
Liked:
- the general premise was really interesting.
- I appreciate what the book was trying to accomplish (whimsical meditation on death).

Disliked:
- Attempts at whimsy fell flat, making the characters feel like cartoons.
- No chemistry between the main leads, the bikini scene was maybe one of the most baffling "sparks fly" scene I've read.
- Prose felt like an early draft, I could see what the author was trying to accomplish, but stylistic choices just pulled me out of the story.
- Characters constantly interrupted what they were saying with an action. This made the dialog feel really unnatural.
- Description was redundant.

YMMV:
- I typically really like heels in fiction, I expected to have a lot of fun with Wallace, but he felt like a caricature of a bad boss.
- Wallace's turnaround felt too fast.
- Per the afterward, the story is a very personal story for the author.
- I felt like the life lessons the characters monolog at each other felt heavy handed
- it's a cozy read with a lot of drinking tea. It's been over 10 chapters and it feels like nothing has happened.
