A Fatal Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum: Murder in Ancient Rome by Emma Southon

dark funny informative medium-paced

4.0

I began by enjoying the humour and flippancy in the narration, but as this book went on I developed a much deeper appreciation for how the author continually reminds you that everything we're discussing happened to real people who lived and breathed and were as human as you are. I can definitely fall into hole that is reading history and feeling a detachment from the fact that everything happened to individuals, but this continually reminded you of the human cost and suffering, all while making a really eye opening examination of Roman approaches to murder in all its various forms.
