This thing started off so strong-- the first section is very well done and conveys the trauma really well. From then on, everything goes downhill. By the end every poem is hee spitting self-love advice constantly to the reader. There is a complete shift in the perspective, going from tales about her life to trying to help us. It does not work. I will not deny the bright spots in this little collection though. The longer poems are clearly well written and are great to read. And her use of specific words in some poems are really well done and powerful. And the apology poem to all women she called pretty was great too. There is clearly talent in here, but I feel like it is wasted trying to be preachy. Similarly, some of the poems in here are pretty solid-- I consider them poetry-- but some others are barely poetry. There is absolutely no structure, no rhyme, and oftentimes only lines "show" they are poems. When she talks about her father analyzing single stanzas at a time for meaning, I wonder how some of the stuff in here can be as shallow as it is.
I know this review is all over the place and pretty negative-- but you cannot deny the positives, and I know tons of people relate to this. If it sounds like your cup of tea-- give it a shot, it's a short read. But, don't expect anything groundbreaking.
