The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien

4.0

The first half was difficult. It starts with a very archaic, almost biblical style. It’s known that this was Tolkien’s proposed sequel to The Hobbit, but the publisher rejected it for being too dry, so he wrote The Lord of the Rings instead. Smart move in hindsight.

By the second half I was really enjoying this, and some of the folk tales were just wonderful; Tolkien can really write.

But this is not entirely a readable book. It seems to be more of a comprehensive source for later, greater works. Still, very enjoyable if you can stick with it.
