Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher

5.0

Set in England and Scotland (mostly Scotland) this book is a quiet novel. It is the story of Oscar, Elfrida, Carrie, Lucy and Sam and how they all end up together in a huge estate house over the Christmas holiday time. The effects of a great tragedy throw Oscar and Elfrida together, then one by one the others trickle in and all of their lives change.

Pilcher’s stitching together the characters and their stories reminded me so much of what I’ve always thought Charles Dickens did so well: take a host of various characters, introduce their different storylines, and then by the end, the characters and their stories have all been seamlessly woven together. Pilcher beautifully does this and manages to weave a great tapestry, with the end result a beautiful masterpiece.

It’s such a cozy read that will warm your heart. It’s got some hard things, yes; but it is a story of kindness, love, and rebirth. The writing is exquisite both in terms of descriptions and just the writing overall. Pilcher pens the characters and their stories so well, that you become to feel as if you know them personally. You become invested in each of these characters. And the last page leaves you in joyful tears with just the perfect finish for the book. I can’t recommend this book enough!
