Reckless by Lauren Roberts

it was messy.
first, the pacing was insane. i feel like the events in this book could’ve easily been spread across 2 books. but at the same time, astonishingly, literally nothing of importance happens within the first 90% of the book and im not exaggerating.
second, i defended powerless for being trope-heavy bc i thought the story could hold its own regardless of the tropes. but i can’t defend this book. i get it. they are enemies to lovers. i feel like my skull is being bashed in every 2 pages with that reminder.
also- a lot of people love this series bc of the banter. which i totally understand. i think that is one of Lauren’s strongest elements in her writing. but when the book is 90% playful flirty banter, 10% dialogue that actually moves the story along…..it does not work at all.
and i have to mention the quotes in this book that were purely written for tiktok. that sounds harsh but i don’t know another way to phrase it. “oh but you are my undoing. my deliverance. my downfall disguised as a deity. you are my ruin” …… and like ok sure this would be cute and fine if the entire book was written in this deep manner but it’s not. like i said, it’s all playful little banter and nothing serious going on. so all these insane deep love confessions are so out of place and so clearly meant for a booktok “OMG KAI AZER ULTIMATE BOOK BOYFRIEND” video.
anyways i feel like im being very harsh. this book is definitely not the worst thing i’ve read this year. i just wanted to rant 😔🫶🏻 oh and that ending made no sense and it felt like it was purely written to throw a random cliffhanger in there lol peace out bye
