Old School by Tobias Wolff

I so loved this book. It is probably not for everyone, but for the circle of readers who like quiet, thoughtful, contemplative fiction, centered on a narrative about prep schools, where a love of writing--and writers--is fostered, this short but affecting novel is for you. (How big is that circle? I hope very big.) The send-up of Ayn Rand, in which her visceral distaste of all things idealistic, altruistic, and noble is pitted against a room filled with devoted masters and impressionable boys is pure gold.
