Monticello: A Daughter and Her Father by Sally Cabot Gunning

4.0

Martha Jefferson with her struggles with slavery, gender, and society is one I haven't read before. It was fascinating to hear how she and her family thought about slavery, the goods and evils, the justifications and the sorrows. A story that makes you sympathetic while trying to still see clearly the rights and wrongs. What really was right? What was best for the family? Do you prioritize the individual over the whole? The reality and grittiness of the early 1800s is shown and it makes me glad it's not that way anymore!
