Deadly Little Voices by Laurie Faria Stolarz

4.0

There is a sort of consistency to this series in that Camelia is bound to have some premonitions regarding someone in danger and that she will feel compelled to help the person. It's kinda like Nancy Drew but with a touch of the supernatural.

This time around, Camelia is hearing angry, angry voices that tell her she's fat, useless and that she should just kill herself. It doesn't help that everyone at home is sort of on edge ever since her mentally unsound aunt came to live with them.

I found Deadly Little Voices to be a little darker than the previous installments but at the same time, it truly shows Camelia's strength. Given what she has to go though this time, given all the different scary premonitions she has to experience, she's doing quite well on her own. She's determined to help someone and she's proactive as well; seeking help when she knows that she's going to need it.

The romance aspect of things, for me at least, wasn't that strong this time around. Camelia is obviously still pining for Ben which confuses me, why would she want to be away from him. He admits to missing her, she admits to missing him, she even gets jealous when another girl starts hanging around Ben; clearly, she still has feelings for him. Still, I'm not very pleased with Ben's actions in this novel. It is obvious that he cares for Camelia but I didn't like how he made decisions involving her on his own. He also still has a lot of trust issues and I hope he'd be able to resolve them soon.

Despite the crappy stuff Adam has done in the previous books, I found him the more likable hero this time around. He cares for Camelia, he helps her out in her investigation and proves to be the comic relief when she needs it. Perhaps he's meant to be the antithesis to Ben, but I was pleased with the novel's ending.

The mystery element of the novel was a little predictable but I did have some fun with the guessing. I'm definitely excited for the concluding novel!
