Takahashi plays the shameless Murakami self insert. He knows how to calm Mari, a flat, child like young adult who has insecurities. He’s so smart and well spoken and deep, and she just receives it all. We’re never really prompted about Mari’s feelings. Generally, this book feels as if someone else tried to write in Murakami’s style. It is so distant from his normal mystic tone.
If you're looking for a Murakami, this ain't it.
