The Late Americans by Brandon Taylor

dark reflective medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? Character

5.0

What Brandon Taylor is able to achieve with words is absolutely astounding. He wields prose in a way that strips characters down to their most contradictory and base impulses, everything they say or do reveals something so innate and specific that it feels like I’m reading someone’s most private thoughts. Reading Taylor is like reading a lush, character-driven Classic, something so timeless and pure and real that you can’t help but end the book feeling like you somehow know both more and less about the human condition as a result. I did sometimes get lost in the sheer number of characters and all of their competing interests/desires/fears, so I think going into this book knowing there’s zero plot and lots of interconnected, deep character studies might set you up for success. Brandon Taylor has done it again, proving himself to be one of the best writers of our time.
