Son of the Shadows by Juliet Marillier

4.0

This sequel follows the next generation of characters of the family we grew to love in Daughter of the Forest. I didn't enjoy this one quite as much as the first, but that doesn't detract from the fact that it was also amazing.

This book is definitely a somber, emotionally wrenching tale. While the first book was all about hope and trust, this one focused on the flip side of the coin--secrets, betrayals, anger. It weaves a complex story of the consequences of actions and the frailty of bonds between people.

Now, I didn't feel quite as attached to these characters as I did to the characters of the first book (some of whom we revisit), but I was just as taken by the author's beautiful writing and prose. It really was a sad, tragic story and there was much foreshadowing of more challenging events to come in the next book.
