disappointing.

i feel like many parts were dragged on for absolutely no reason. despite the 500+ pages, there was absolutely no chemistry between the main couple and i honestly didn't care much for any of the main characters. it was supposed to be enemies to lovers, but i felt none of the usual angst and pining there are in books with this trope. in fact, i'd go so far as to say that this book would've been much better without any romance, it was an unnecessary filler in a book that already had so much potential.

the last few pages (seriously, like the last 20 pages or so) was the only bit that i actually enjoyed, and i think it is because the love interest was out of the picture, so more focus was given to the main character and her plight.

Spoiler inan's betrayal was so pathetic? like 1 crumb of affection from his father and he's forgotten the everything he saw in zelie's memories that changed his view on magic as a whole. it just seemed out of place, especially since he didnt really seem very conflicted about his stance on bringing back magic, so how could he change his mind so much so quickly?

i definitely will not be continuing this series. as i said, the ending was enjoyable, but not enough to make me forget how i had to force myself to read 400+ pages.
