Some super cool details here, like the universe they went into and met Catherine the Great. But the quality of the writing has absolutely gone down with each book in the series. The first one was more precise and technically correct than than that ones that have come after, this one being the most careless in that sense. It could be genius level plotting--as Irene has friends to tether her in more human concerns, her language relaxes from the exactness of the Library--but that's a stretch. This isn't the most generous critique, but the author made a universe with strict and precise grammar.
It also ends extremely abruptly. The climactic confrontation is very very cool and was done well, but then there is very little time between the confrontation and the final sentence. I would have been very interested in some more time at the end there with these characters.
