Oh William! by Elizabeth Strout

4.0

“Grief is such a—oh, it is such a solitary thing; this is the terror of it, I think. It is like sliding down the outside of a really long glass building while nobody sees you.”

I know I’m grading this one on a curve. If you have never read anything by Elizabeth Strout, this probably shouldn’t be your first. Most people will tell you to start with Olive Kitteridge (Amy & Isabelle is my favorite).

But if you love this author, you will likely enjoy this one. Her ability to convey the human experience with both beauty and brevity is unparalleled. No one can take recognizable inner thoughts and put them in the minds of characters like she can. She belongs on any list of great American authors.
