Seasons of the Storm by Elle Cosimano
3.0
First and foremost, I would like to thank Harpercollins Canada for providing me with an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
Where should we begin?
Let's start with the characters. In this novel, we follow characters who have become seasons. You heard that right folk, seasons. The characters in this novel where very unique and unlike anything I had read before. The characters in this novel each have unique voices and personalities. They are not hard to differentiate from when you are reading, especially since this is a dual perspective novel. They are a little immature I find, though they are stuck permanently as teenagers. This made my reading experience lag slightly as some of the things that they said or did seem very out of place. Though I seemed to see them as adults rather than teenagers.
The world-building here didn't need much help as it seems to take place in modern-day. This was a bit of a let down as I thought we would get to see some other types of magic possibly, or perhaps a different world we weren't used to seeing. This was an expectation I had and should've left when I started the novel. It is no fault of the author. Though I enjoyed seeing the way the seasons fought and had to "kill" each other for the next season to carry on the weather aspects.
The plot of this novel did seem to drag a bit more than I had anticipated. I think that there was quite a bit of filler that didn't necessarily need to be included in the full story. There were times when the filler didn't even seem to further the plot, it was just there to keep the story from suddenly stopping. The action-packed parts of this story were very fast-paced, descriptive and just overall brilliant. These were very well written, you could feel the emotions of the characters, their brute strength and will. This author is very good at writing action and making it engaging, never once during an action scene did I roll my eyes. There is on, in particular, I won't share due to it being a spoiler that had me sitting on the edge of my seat wondering how it was going to play out. The final action scene had me near tears because of the emotions of the characters and the things they were willing to do for one another.
I gave this book a 3.5/5 star, I think that it was still an amazing read and I do still recommend it. Especially if you are looking for something fresh, unique, and just a fun time.
