The Prophets by Robert Jones Jr.

challenging dark emotional sad medium-paced

4.75

For me, this felt like a new generation’s The Color Purple — one of my favorite books of all time. I think that Walker had a little bit of a better grasp on lyrical writing than Jones Jr. At times, it felt like Jones added a bit too much lyricism at the beginning of the novel. It could be an intentional choice, but I did find the back half of the novel much more digestible and a better balance of plot and lyricism. However, The Prophets is definitely one that will take me weeks if not months to digest. I think revisiting this novel (which I rarely do) is in my future, as it is one that I think I will get more and more out of this book the more I reread it.
