The Discreet Hero by Mario Vargas Llosa

3.0

A strong start, that petered out rapidly once the core plotlines were tied up. However, the translation in this copy (Faber & Faber, 2015) was unfortunately very cumbersome, full of stilted language and dialogue that no real person has likely ever used. I realise that translation is an extremely difficult job, one I could certainly never do, and I don't really want to criticise. Sadly, I don't feel it could go unremarked upon in this case.
