Into the Black Nowhere by Meg Gardiner

3.5

I enjoyed this - the ending made me excited to read the final instalment. It's just a solid crime series, with a more thriller edge.

I put this one off for a while because I couldn't really remember much detail of what happened in the first book, but it's following a completely different killer and does a good job or summarising the previous book whenever things from it come up. I really enjoyed the addition of Rainey.

One thing I was confused about was
Spoiler the stuff with Sonnet White (the woman with the black cat tattoo). I thought maybe she'd turn out to be the accomplice. Even once it was revealed that it was the receptionist, I thought it could still have been her just with a changed appearance. I guess she was just another victim? Though not sure we got 100% confirmation on that. I definitely could be missing something here though.

Then the other thing that knocked this down was
Spoiler the "twist" of there being two killers, when that was also the twist of the first book - although admittedly this was a different dynamic.
