Four years ago Genny was a young debutante. She had a passionate affair with Leo but after the house party ended he left her and never returned. Circumstances have altered. Genny is now the chaperone for her cousin Charlotte, the dowdy spinster.
Leo and his three friends are notorious (although for what is never really made clear). The only female in his group, Jez has been made a widow which would be a cause for celebration if her wife-beating husband hadn't left every penny to his heir. Unless Jez is pregnant his heir, Mr Warren, gets everything and Jez will be destitute.
Jez has sworn revenge and she has heard that Mr Warren has set his eye on Charlotte so she forces Leo and their friend Tristan to seduce Charlotte away from Mr Warren.
Soon Genny and Leo are pitted against each other as Genny tries to keep her charge away from certain ruin.
Both Leo and Genny have never truly recovered from their affair, Leo certainly regrets allowing his father to persuade him that marriage would be a mistake and so their clashes are fuelled by sexual undertones. So far so good.
But Leo pursues Genny relentlessly.He rides roughshod over Genny's wishes and, despite his constant reassurances that he would never harm Genny's reputation, it seemed to me that every action he took was highly likely to harm Genny's reputation, especially since she was a paid companion. I didn't like that.
Genny and Leo also danced around each other and their feelings. I had no idea whether Leo wanted an affair or wanted to marry Genny. It later transpires that he wanted to marry her from the get go but wanted to see if they had anything in common other than lust. So of course he tries to have sex with her at every opportunity - 'cos that will help!
Much like other series I have read, the snippets in this book which foretell the inevitable books about the other members of the Dangerous Rogues seem more interesting. I guess time will tell whether the snippets are better than the books.
