A Town Called Solace by Mary Lawson

emotional mysterious medium-paced

3.75

A Town Called Solace by Mary Lawson rotates the POVs of three very different but connected residents in a small Canadian town named Solace. There’s an old woman in a hospital, a man starting fresh in an unexpectedly inherited house, and a young girl whose older sister just ran away.

Solace is the cliché small town where everyone knows everyone’s business. Each POV shares an intriguing perspective on secrets, love, and fulfillment in a setting that also feels like character.

The prose has a distinct mood. It’s a quick and mellow read, which felt incongruous with the subject matter at times. This wasn’t as evocative as expected, but I think its quiet nature was intentionally crafted.

My main critique is an element that was wholly unbelievable to me, but you must accept it for the story’s setup. (Sorry for the vagueness, but more detail would be a spoiler!)

Regardless, I liked this overall!
