Chew, Vol. 6: Space Cakes, by John Layman

5.0

I was ready to give this volume a bright and breezy review, enthusing about the joyous characters of Toni, Caesar, Colby and POYO coming to the fore, as Tony recovers in a hospital bed following the events of the previous volume.

And then the final chapter came along.

This is the first time Chew has gone for the emotional jugular and boy oh boy is it fiendishly brilliant in its execution. Without realising it, the reader is being manipulated by the preceding chapters so that when that final chapter unfolds, its impact is at a maximum.

Argh! So gut wrenchingly clever, even if my heart is broken.
