The Fall of the House of Usher and Other Tales by Edgar Allan Poe, Stephen Marlowe

Read a “retelling” of the Fall of the House of Usher for book club and was motivated to pick up the Greatest Hits that inspired the cover. This is a large volume of stories that I will read in between other books until I complete the collection or I run out of renewals with the library.

Reviews by story to follow:

The Balloon-Hoax: fake (transatlantic balloon) news. 2.5 stars.

Ms. Found In A Bottle: the real twist in this story for me was realizing that “Ms.” is short for “Message” and not “Miss/Missus”. 3 stars.

A Descent into the Maelstrom: the sea was angry that day my friends. Some decent thrills from a rough boat ride. 3.5 stars.

The Murders In the Rue Morgue: Reader, you won't believe who did it. Rather dull in spite of the gore and the investigation's absurd conclusion. 3 stars.

The Purloined Letter: the brilliance of this Dupin character is far less impressive than I think it’s intended to be. Excited to start incorporating “purloined” into my everyday vocabulary. 3.5 stars.

The Black Cat: Man acquires cat and descends into alcoholism, madness. Relatable. 3.5 stars.
