Confessions of Felix Krull, Confidence Man by Thomas Mann

2.0

A charming diversion to be sure.

My two stars are mostly about my interest in the book and don't reflect on its quality. I think what most affected my experience of this book was similar to how reading the Idiot was after having read Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov. The comic, satirical novels are just not my favorite. Nevertheless there were a few exceptional moments in this novel-the paleontology professor, the circus, the military draft examination- and it unfortunately suffers from being unfinished. It's by no means a thoughtlessly vapid novel. Ultimately though, I prefer The Magic Mountain and Buddenbrooks by far.
