When You Wish Upon a Lantern by Gloria Chao

With every ounce of respect from writer to writer, I think the guy's POV is a little forced right now. I understand he's young and has had a crush on the girl for years though I think it could be executed more subtly. At least with my experience of liking someone for a long period, it tends to be something that we do fawn over the person but it's more mature and accepted. I love the parts where Kai gets giddy at Liya's smile or the things she does, it's adorable, but there's such thing as over-mentioning affection for a character (even in a romance).

That's so far my only complaint about the book! I love the banter between Kai and Liya, it's very organic and well-thought-out. They both have this sort of soulmate, on-the-same-wavelength thing that's rare in books that I find very charming. I love the portrayal of culture because I learn new things about Asian culture and these characters aren't just culture but relatable people.

Overall, I love how cute it is so far and that I'll keep reading!

I just finished the book! It's so cute!
