Susan Earlam’s Dark is the Water is an anthology of weird and horror-ish stories that will leave you in discomfort. As someone who loves horror or other unsettling stories, I found that Earlam was successful in capturing a weird eeriness in her stories. The first story, entitled “Baby” caught me off-guard. As someone who is not easily disturbed by horror, I was quite impressed with some of the stories, including the disturbingly funny “Milk”.
I did have some minor issues with some aspects of the writing. I found the story-telling lacking at times which made following the stories difficult. I also found some of the stories boring. This was the case with the “Dark is the Water” which left me a little disappointed.
Overall, I found this reading enjoyable and recommend it to fans of body gore/horror, and animals in horror.
