A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin

"Classic" fantasy tale in the style of Tolkein - origin story, told as if legend, with slightly stilted language and densely packed with world-building details of people and places.

Really enjoyable and it's obvious why this has become a classic series in it's own right.
