I have two main issues with this book
1. I kept waiting for it to be over. There was a bit of pace when the trial started but by that point I didn’t feel emotionally invested in the characters enough to really care about the verdict. Especially, after the verdict I think the book should have ended. If discredited any semblance of good plot by rushing the next 40 years into like 20 pages and I feel the reason wasn’t enough to cheapen the novel
2. The main character reflected a lot of racist stereotypes eg. Being a “savage” and “wild”, illiterate, poor, abused, isolated; but it felt like the author was trying to get away with it because the main character was white- a thinly veiled opinion. Like all these reflect racism but we are meant to believe that it’s not because the character is white
