City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

4.0

I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed this. Clary discovers an underworld in New York and creatures that she but others cannot see. Her mother is kidnapped and her best friend is turned into a rat. The story in told in a way that makes this actuallly believeable and interesting. That rat episode had me laughing so hard and involved a daring rescue trip to get Simon back from the vampire lair before he was eaten. And oh, then there were werewolves. Fun and fascinating, with an undertone of alienation and the quest for belonging.
