Tamora Pierce will always be one of my favorite authors. I fell in love with Tortall starting with The Immortals and eventually read them all. Repeatedly. Constantly.
This one just, IDK, it didn’t hit the same for me. And no, it’s not just because it’s for a much younger person than I am now. I can still re-read her books as an adult & just, have such love, such enjoyment. It’s also not the aspect it’s very focused on schooling. A lot of her books have that focus (Alanna, Keladry). Nor was it the fact that we know how Arram/Numair’s future will be.
Arram/Numair was always one of my favorites (issues with his future relationship aside). He’s just not the same interesting, witty person we eventually know. Which yeah yeah, he’s essentially 10 - 14 in this book. He most definitely was going to be an awkward kid because let’s be honest, he’s sometimes an awkward adult. I did just not feel myself loving these characters as much (even though NGL, Ozorne as a villain *chefs kiss*). There is literally no conflict & if there is, it’s not resolved.
I don’t hate it. I’m not mad at it. I will always love this world (except you Beka Cooper, there’s a reason I haven’t finished your series 😴😴😴). I’m hoping she can knock this trilogy out shortly in the next couple of years 🤞🏻
