The Highway, by C.J. Box

4.0

Even though I have MAJOR issues with the plot and a lot of the characters in The Highway, I was still so completely drawn into the book that I finished it in one sitting. Yes, the majority of the characters are horrifically misogynistic, and I'm not even including the serial killer rapist truck driver in that count because of course he is a terrible person. And yes, the detailed descriptions of everyone's guns and super western clothing were over the top and annoying. Either the author isn't sure his readers will appreciate the rural Montana setting without those descriptions or he was sponsored by various gun manufacturers and Carhartt. I'm just not sure. In the end, my annoyance with the misogyny and the repetitiveness was completely overshadowed by the plot. I was both thoroughly creeped out by the Lizard King and so enthralled with Cassie's efforts to save Gracie and Danielle that I read The Highway in about 2 1/2 hours because I was incapable of putting it down.
