It's a difficult book to say much about with clarity. It's hard to define.
It seems autobiographical and may be. A boy who drifts in and out of awareness tells the story of his family's troubles in the days surrounding a non fictional coup.
There are funny passages, poignant childhood memories and long dense passages where he recounts in the manner of a child's bookish learnings all the coups, political machinations and wars that scarred post world war 2 Africa as the continent shrugged the colonial yoke.
