This story is heartbreaking. Although a work of fiction, it is based on real events of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl which, I think, make this even more of a harrowing journey to read.

Hannah’s writing is so beautifully detailed that I felt utterly transported to a different time and place.

Elsa is such a powerful and courageous woman who doesn’t know her own strength, having been underestimated her whole life. Her fierce determination and unconditional love for her family make her one of the best protagonists I’ve encountered in a long time.

I raged for Elsa and the hardships she was forced to endure. My heart broke for her as she done everything in her power to keep her family safe.

Loreda, Elsa’s daughter and our second POV throughout this book, was just as fierce and determined as her mother. At times, as with all mother-daughter relationships, they clashed and fought, however, at its roots, this is a story of the deep, loving bond between them.

I adored this book. It was an emotional rollercoaster with strong female leads and a powerful story line.
