Insel im schwarzen Fluss: Die Geschichte einer verkauften Kindheit in Thailand by Rüdiger Siebert

3.0

I'd give this book 3.5 stars.

On the back of the book it says that it's for children of the age of 10 and up. Sometimes, I thought certain words which were picked could be a bit too difficult to understand for said young readers. But then again, the repetitive explanation of which name belongs to whom (e.g. “his sister Oie”) seemed superfluous. I think anyone – even aged 10 – is able to remember the names when they were mentioned just a few pages before.

The book is rather fast-paced which made sense at the beginning, but felt a bit abrupt during the final chapters.

The content itself taught me about the horrible lives children of poor families have to go through – eventually having to sell their childhood in order for their families to survive.
