Oy, this book is a doozy. Powerful. You want to talk teenage angst, and basically every tough thing a Native American teenager might have to deal with - this book covers it. Alcoholism, racism, bullying, death, gambling, poverty, abuse, white savior-ism, traditions and community, etc - it's truly eye-opening if you don't know much about what our country has done to Native Americans. It's an important read.
.
I was really disappointed to learn (with only a little of the book left) about the sexual harassment allegations surrounding Alexie from 2018 - pretty tough for me to want to support him as a person/writer from here on out even though I think this book is a critial read and stands alone in it's premise.
