pleasantly surprised with the ending: before midnight if it wasn’t heartbreaking. the end definitely redeemed it for me, it was warm and comforting. i think i could’ve enjoyed it more if i was more aware of the history of france and russia at this time etc. 

the way it dealt with time reminded me a bit of the idiot by elif batuman - the days bleed into one and its more like a stream of consciousness.
