Violet was never meant to be a dragon rider, but when her mother, General Sorrengail, insists she join the Riders Quadrant at Basgiath War College, it will take all the strength she has to survive.
I’ll go out on a limb and say that if you’ve been on booksta for the last few weeks you’ve seen a few reviews of this one. It’s wildly hyped and somewhat came out of nowhere, but I was heavily influenced to buy it because it’s just so pretty. I’d heard good things but had no specific expectations when I started reading.
If there were ever a book that deserved more than 5 stars, it would be this one. I’m not exaggerating when I tell you this may be my favorite book ever.
From the first chapter, I was pulled totally and completely into Violet’s world. I love her as a main character—she’s dealing with a disability/chronic illness and is a relatable struggling human lead rather than the usual near-perfect and inexplicably invincible heroine we often get in fantasy novels. The world building is fascinating but not overly complex, making this book equally accessible for fantasy lovers or those new to the genre. And the dragons are, in a word, incredible—I’ve always been a fan (they’re easily one of my top three mythical creatures) but the ones here are SO MUCH FUN and leap off the page as real fully-formed characters in their own right.
And, finally, I could not conclude this review without mentioning Xaden Riorson. He’s perfection in an MMC—easily tied for my all-time favorite book boyfriend and unlikely to be displaced anytime soon. If you like ACOTAR, I describe him as “all the hottest parts of all three bat boys in one”—but if you have no idea what that means he’s also just an incredible, sexy, captivating character in his own right.
Recommended to anyone, but especially if you like: The Hunger Games/Divergent; dragons; utterly addictive fantasy novels
