The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

4.0

Honestly, I didn't like story, but I couldn't put it down, so explain that one.
I liked parts of it, but overall it was too gut-wrenching and horrific for me to sit back and say "Oh my god I loved this book." I think more than anything it tore at something in me that was already kind of bleeding from all the current events going on. But gore never used to horrify me, so beyond the vividly horrific picture this painted, the story itself had me in it's talons from the beginning, though I'd have to agree with some previous reviewers that the story didn't see contiguous. We saw many sides of the same woman, but I kept waiting for some dynamism. She doesn't change, so what is the point? She only becomes more rigidly calculating. We leave her with no hope, because the desire for revenge does not carry hope with it. But all of that and still it was beautifully written and I'm debating if I want to read the other two books or not.
