Savage Gods by Peter Boland

5.0

This book starts with John escaping a heatwave and heading to the beach. All nice so far and he even has a flask of tea. He doesn’t even make it that far after his spidey senses detect something isn’t right with a pick up waiting in a queue to get to the beach. And this readers is precisely why I love these books so much. Our hero isn’t a 20/30 something he’s older and to me that gives him a wealth of experience. But he suffers the consequences of his actions with his health. “Now at 60, his body wore tiredness like an overcoat”. He’s not as fit physically or mentally and after a full on action sequence you get to see how vulnerable he is. Including the strong presence of his PTSD manifestation Jeff Perkins.

Another thing I love is the partnership between Savage and Tannaz the tech whizz and DCI Roberts is fitting in nicely too as a major player. Bringing them on board when murders of atheists are discovered using religious torture methods. As a non believer myself I still find religion fascinating and this plot was certainly that. I really want to say more but for God’s sake people read it yourself. See what I did there haha!!!

These are probably in amongst my fastest reads as they are so full on and once you start reading you are sucked into a Savage vortex and only spat out once you have reached the end. And wow what an ending. Better be a book five Mr Boland.

If you want a thriller with a difference, one with original plot lines, plenty of action, characters you care for and baddies you can love to hate. One that grips you from the start and doesn’t let go and a hero who loves tea then what are you waiting for.
