Harrow County, Volume 1: Countless Haints by Cullen Bunn

4.0

This is a really enjoyable folk horror/coming of age story. The creatures and lore are very atmospheric and unique, and I love Emmy as a main character who's still figuring herself out and grappling with her immense power vs. how much autonomy she actually has.

The introduction of
Spoilerher secret twin Kammi
came out of nowhere and sort of threw me for a loop. That's not really the kind of plot twist I like so it was hard for me to be super engaged in that plot line, though it did have a satisfying end. I liked seeing Emmy settle into her role as "town healer" but I wasn't a huge fan of how quickly the first plot was settled when it began as such a high stakes situation. It was difficult for me, as a reader, to forgive Emmy's father as quickly as she forgave him.

That said I still enjoyed this graphic novel a lot and am excited to read Volume 2.
