Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

3.0

The Netflix series just premiered today so I am right on time!
I have nothing more to add to the almost decade-long conversation around this book. It's okay. You can definitely feel it was written around the YA boom when almost every story revolved around a boring plain but also gorgeous main character with her army of one-dimensional men all in love with her somehow. She's the chosen one, yadi yadi yada we get it.
It's nothing to write home about, especially in 2021, but I still think it's an entertaining read. I'll say though that I wish the Darkling's character took the "redeeming mistakes of our fathers" path instead of the "dark brooding and violent dictator" path because I would've understood why everybody hypes this man up so much.
Overall, I wish I read it back in 2012 was I was young and had zero expectations when it comes to YA fantasy. I will continue on with the series because I want to read King of Scars, but it's really not that great.
