Cafe Europa: Life After Communism by Slavenka Drakulić

3.0

After a trip to Eastern Europe I wanted to learn more about the effect that communism had on that part of the world and this book seemed to fit the bill perfectly.

This is a series of articles written from 1992 to 1996. Mostly centering on the former Yugoslavia, as that is where the author grew up, but encompassing the outlook and feelings of the entire area.
I didn’t visit Eastern Europe until 2012 but much of what she wrote still holds true today and I found it enlightened my North American mind to the culture of the area and how the communist rule affected the people. It was a good book, though a little outdated for the present day, and worth the read to understand just how much communism affected the mind, body and culture of Eastern Europe.
