Out of the Blue by Jason June

Okay but THIS.
Things I loved:
- The nonbinary representation (aka the way it is automatically accepted and taken on by other characters, the way that it is presented as a functional/normal part of society, and the way that the NB character (who comes from a culture where EVERYONE uses they/them) sees genders how gendered culture damages people while making very little sense)
- The fake-dating trope- bonus points that it is to make an ex jealous/'win them back' (aka a trope I don't usually love but was done well here)
- The little mermaid culture tidbits (it was just really interesting to conjure the world in my mind)
- The comments on climate change/pollution/environmentalism
- The realism of the ending / experiences of love at their age
Things I didn't love:
- Also the ending? I read the whole thing and for what *cries*
- Occasionally the writing (some overused wording, sometimes felt a little unorganised, also felt a little cringe at times BUT this did not take away from the story and may also simply be because this is aimed at readers a little younger than me)
Overall, this is definitely worth the read as it is so cute, quick to get through, and such a lovely queer story with some great representation. *claps*
