My god, are we sure this book is by a debut author? It was so beautifully dark and well written, the magic system is so unique, and the world is so richly woven. Elspeth and Nightmare are beyond delightful. There is a perfect mix of politics, magic, with just enough romance but it's not at the front. If I had to ding it for one thing, I wish there was an included appendix for the cards, their descriptions and what they do and what the trade off is, I ended up finding one online to reference. After a bit, you do start to remember so it's not bad. The ending made me put the book down and immediately go grab the second one. I will recommend this to anyone who will listen.
