Before the Coffee Gets Cold, by Toshikazu Kawaguchi

Second time reading this book, first time reviewing it. Everyone and their mother knows about this book. People either love or hate it. Heartwarming tales aren’t for everyone, is what i’ve noticed when I read poor reviews on Before The Coffee Gets Cold. Some find it boring others find it reflective. I am in the group of ‘others’ that find books alike to this one reflective and relaxing.

My quick take on the book: It’s a collection of stories that teach us about accepting life and the decisions you make along the way. Whether they were good/bad, difficult/easy, sad/exciting decisions. Before The Coffee Gets Cold explores the difference between dwelling on your past compared to dealing and healing from your past.

*THIS PART OF THE REVIEW MAYBE A BIT OF A SPOILER*

Having read this book twice, I only have one additional thing to add from my previous first impression; the last story was a little off to me the second time around. The stories are meant to express human experience, hence a story of a woman yearning to bear a child, even if it means her own life is definitely a struggling experience that many individuals have dealt with all around the world. Having said that, that’s the type of story I would bring up in a pro choice discussion on the ethics behind deciding to keep a child you can’t care for. This is the part of this book where I was giving some side eyes to. The conclusion of that story was still very impactful and moving but just something I reflected on now. Furthermore, I believe that some stories are meant to be read in an objective lens and this is no exception. Still worth reading and will definitely continue recommending it.
