Bear Witness by Mary Gaitskill

5.0

Mary Gaitskill delivers, without a doubt, the strongest piece of this collection. This story carefully weaves together and then rips apart the lives of a Special Education teacher, her student that connected to her in a way that he did not explain to others, and another woman on the outside who is eventually drawn into their circle. It is brutal. This piece is the only one grounded fully in reality, and it is the one that hurts the most. There was a lot of gasping and walking away hand-over-mouth on my part as I slowly put the pieces together.
