Iron Kingdom: The Rise and Downfall of Prussia, 1600–1947 by Christopher Clark

Okay, in full disclosure, I gave up on this book. Incredibly dense, and the scope of its subject is so massive in time and implication that the authors insistence on going over every. single. detail. of the historical inception of what are seriously insignificant -and more often than not completely off subject- aspects of Prussian society make it an unbelievably unsatisfactory read.

Save yourself the trouble; you can get the same experience by going to the Wikipedia article on Prussia and clicking on every link that you come across when you come across it.
