Roadkill by Dennis E. Taylor

On a roadtrip and we decided we loved listening to Ray Porter read ANYTHING, and love the humor of Dennis E. Taylor-big Bobiverse fans here!

Jack Kernigan has been suspended from MIT for an infraction he didn’t commit, and is back home in small Ohio town working for his dad at the family grocery store. One day delivering groceries, he hits something, well, big…but the problem is, the big thing is invisible. And the invisible thing is clearly not of this planet.

Jack recruits his two best friends, Patrick and Natalie to help him solve the mystery of this strange and VERY dead creature. The three friends find themselves as Earth’s best hope to save humanity from an evil interstellar conspiracy. With the help of an incredibly snarky AI they dub “Sheldon”, and the use of a very cool spaceship, these unlikely heroes will have to overcome several challenges to rescue the world.

For me, the characters were incredibly “flat”, I wanted MORE depth from Jack. I was expecting the details that Taylor gave in the Bobiverse series, but this felt more like I was reading a screenplay. The story is certainly entertaining, but I probably would not have enjoyed the book so much if it wasn’t for Ray Porter’s narration. Five stars for the Audible performance, and an excellent listen for a road trip!
