The Assassin's Blade by Sarah J. Maas
5.0
For a novella compilation, this was fantastic. It made me laugh, get angry, sad, and made my heart race.
I think overall it is a brilliant introduction to Celaena’s character, and a very revealing one. At face value she is cold and very morally grey (being an assassin and all) and arrogant. But I think these stories really helped to demonstrate how beneath her shield and trauma she actually has a strong moral code, clearly sees herself as a defender of those who cannot defend themselves, has a great deal of anger to work through, and actually seems like an inherently good person who has been corrupted by the world.
The Assassin and the Underworld was my favourite story, closely followed by The Assassin and the Empire because I think they both reveal the most about Celaena. Plus Sam is just such a sweetheart and their relationship, short as it was, was everything.
I genuinely enjoyed all of the novellas. I’m praying that some of the characters return in later books, and most importantly; Rourke Farran and Arobynn better die a slow and painful deaths. I want them to be betrayed and tortured.
Can’t wait to read the series now! I definitely recommend people read this. It may be a prequel but it is worth reading and is actually interesting, adding to the story rather than just being some boring reiteration of things you already know from the series.
