I have so many problems with this book and have no idea how to feel about it. On one hand, I was uncomfortable with the way the author addressed mental health, trauma, and homosexuality in this book. I feel like this book was extremely overhyped; I've heard people complain that the trigger warnings for the trauma in this book weren't explicit enough and I agree. Yet, at the same time Yanagihara has a very beautiful and captivating writing style, and the first sections of the book were gorgeous.
Graphic: Death, Pedophilia, Physical abuse, Self harm, Sexual assault, Sexual violence, and Suicide attempt
Moderate: Ableism and Suicidal thoughts
Minor: Homophobia
